The Voice Up Gap Year Fellowship
Purpose-Centered Learning for Times of Transition
At the heart of Voice Up's work is a simple but often overlooked truth:
Every person has a story, every story carries meaning, and meaning can become purpose when it is understood, supported, and put into action.
A purpose-centered learning experience for people navigating moments of transition—after high school, during or after college, between careers, or during periods of personal and professional re-orientation.
The Fellowship exists to create structured space—time, community, mentorship, and practice—so people can move forward with clarity without being rushed, labeled, or optimized prematurely.
This Fellowship applies to any discipline—including health, education, business, technology, arts, justice, research, and community leadership—because it focuses not on content or credentials, but on how people learn who they are becoming and how they want to contribute.
The Core Principles That Shape the Fellowship
The Fellowship is designed and governed by Voice Up's five core principles, which are commitments rather than slogans:
Collaboration
All are welcome
Purpose grows in community. Learning happens through dialogue, shared reflection, and belonging across difference.
Humility
We all have much to learn
Fellows are not expected to arrive with answers. Curiosity and listening guide the process.
Precision
All the details matter
Language, lived experience, and context are treated with care so insight can become responsible action.
Patience
We all need forgiveness
Development is not rushed. Uncertainty is honored as a legitimate learning stage.
Empathy
We must understand your why
Each fellow's story is centered as essential to trust, direction, and dignity.
These principles shape pacing, mentoring, expectations, and outcomes throughout the Fellowship.
Learning Through Practice: The 8-Week Guide
The Fellowship is organized around a repeatable 8-Week Guide that moves participants through cycles of:
Reflection and Grounding
Understanding Systems and Context
Applied Practice
Integration and Translation
Each cycle results in a tangible work product—a publication, project, framework, research artifact, or creative work—connected to the fellow's discipline and lived experience. Over time, participants build a portfolio of real work, not just a single capstone.
Tangible Work, Publication, and Long-Term Value
A defining feature of the Voice Up Gap Year Fellowship is that every participant creates at least one durable work that carries forward beyond the gap year.
Across the Voice Up Academic Catalog, fellows and participants have produced health guides, children's books, leadership narratives, educational frameworks, and research-informed publications.
Participants retain authorship of their work and receive mentorship on ethical publication, distribution, and long-term development.
These works are not exercises—they are real contributions that can support future education, career pathways, and in some cases ongoing revenue or impact.
AI Learning, Leadership, and the Future of Work
All Fellows also develop AI learning and leadership skills that are increasingly essential across today's workforce. These skills are learned through applied, human-centered use, not abstract technical training.
Participants learn to:
Understand what AI is and is not
Use AI as a thinking and sensemaking partner in research, writing, design, and analysis
Examine ethical questions around bias, power, and responsibility
Lead with judgment, reflection, and values in AI-enabled environments
AI learning is embedded directly into the 8-Week Guide and real projects, ensuring technology serves human purpose, not the reverse.
Pathways Into Research and the Applied Purpose Science Research Lab
Select participants may also become eligible to join the Applied Purpose Science Research Lab, where they can:
Participate in ongoing qualitative and mixed-methods research
Learn how research questions are designed, governed, and funded
Contribute to studies on purpose, learning, transitions, and AI
Explore how their own ideas might evolve into funded research projects
This creates a rare pathway from reflection → applied work → research participation → potential future funding, governed by clear ethical standards and non-extractive practices.
What the Fellowship Ultimately Offers
A structured pause in a rushed world
A community grounded in dignity and care
Applied, discipline-agnostic learning
AI literacy and ethical leadership skills
Tangible work that endures beyond the gap year
A living connection to a broader canon of purpose-centered scholarship and practice
In Essence
The Voice Up Gap Year Fellowship is not about taking time off. It is about learning how to live, learn, and contribute with clarity, patience, and care—grounded in core principles, real work, and a living canon that treats purpose as essential human infrastructure.
