Dr. Nadine Burke Harris — How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across a Lifetime

Pediatrician Dr. Nadine Burke Harris explains that childhood trauma isn't something you just get over. The repeated stress of abuse, neglect, and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain — unfolding across a lifetime, to the point where those who've experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer.

Miracle Has a Monster — The Story That Gives Kids the Tools

Dr. Burke Harris gives us the science of why childhood anxiety happens. Miracle Has a Monster — a Voice Up children's book by Emily Metheny — gives kids the tools to face it. The book follows a child named Miracle who learns to recognize her "monster" (anxiety), practice breathing and grounding, and find her voice even when the fear is still there.

Together, they are the science and the story — the why and the how — of childhood and anxiety. The 7-day sprint below connects each day to a chapter of the Miracle Has a Monster 8-week module.

Why This Talk Matters at Voice Up

This is not just a science story. It is a public health revolution. The CDC and Kaiser Permanente study asked 17,500 adults about their history of adverse childhood experiences — ACEs. What they found was striking: ACEs are incredibly common, and there is a dose-response relationship between ACEs and the leading causes of death in the United States.

Sixty-seven percent of the population has at least one ACE. One in eight has four or more. A person with four or more ACEs is four and a half times more likely to be depressed and twelve times more likely to attempt suicide.

That is the Voice Up story of systems failing to recognize what is real — and a pediatrician who refused to keep prescribing antibiotics instead of asking what is in the well.

Key Themes — Trauma, the Brain, and the Well

Trauma Gets Under the Skin

Childhood trauma is not something you just get over. In high doses, it affects brain development, the immune system, hormonal systems, and even the way our DNA is read and transcribed. It is a medical issue, not just a social one.

The Dose-Response Relationship

The higher your ACE score, the worse your health outcomes. Four or more ACEs means 4.5 times the risk of depression and 12 times the risk of suicidality. Seven or more means triple the lifetime risk of lung cancer. The dose matters.

The Bear That Comes Home Every Night

The fight-or-flight response is life-saving when you meet a bear in a forest. But when the bear comes home every night — when the stress response is activated over and over — it goes from adaptive to health-damaging. Children are especially sensitive.

"What the Hell Is in This Well?"

Dr. Burke Harris tells a public health story: if 98 of 100 kids drinking from the same well get diarrhea, you can prescribe antibiotics — or you can ask what is in the well. She chose to ask. That is the Voice Up principle of precision applied to systems.
