Refine by Fire does two jobs at once. On the patient side, it tracks behavior, check-ins, health logs, and challenges, then distills resilience, self-efficacy, and burnout signals into a human performance index — a way of knowing where someone stands in their recovery at every point, not just during the appointment. On the clinician side, a companion dashboard works as a kind of operating system: AI-assisted session prep, early flags for dropout risk, intervention before someone disappears. It even handles billing. By the middle of 2026 the app had grown a mentorship and support system, and a pilot was under way with a former professional baseball player.

The premise underneath it is the one Basnight keeps returning to: connection is the intervention. “It’s kind of like a fire,” he said in the summer of 2025. “The more you throw in it, the more it grows... And everyone can kind of feel that warmth of that fire, right? And everyone can be sparked from that.”

In October 2025, Basnight introduced Voice Up to Base44 — the platform that lets someone with an idea and a voice build a working application, the kind of tool it would cost millions of dollars to replicate. The introduction changed how the organization builds: a colleague’s “Step into Success” purpose app was constructed on Base44 in its wake, and Basnight has since done backend and system-administration work on it — earning, along the way, the nickname “King Omar.”

It is worth noting what he did not do: he did not keep the tool to himself. He handed it over, taught people to use it, and stayed to help maintain what they made. That, as much as Refine by Fire, is why the Innovator of the Year designation stuck.

Service runs in Basnight’s family, and he talks about it plainly. His mother served thirty years in the military as a single mom — his inspiration, in his telling. His aunt is a nurse of twenty-plus years; a close friend is a teacher. He played basketball and football, finished his undergraduate degree in 2021, and went into the medically oriented work — the hospital floors, the tutoring sessions — that put him in daily contact with people trying to get better.

“I believe it provides purpose for me,” he said in his first onboarding conversation, “and I believe that I can provide purpose for others.” A year later, asked to recite the organization’s mission on cue, he answered without hesitation: “For everyone to find their purpose.”

There is a line he uses about fear — “a lot of times in life, fear can be shackles. So, once you kind of get those shackles off in life, you’re able to move forward freely” — that might serve as the epigraph for the whole project. The app, the mentorship system, the 167-hour gap: it is all, in the end, an attempt to unshackle people, one tracked behavior at a time.
